Microneedling can be used in medicine for a very wide number of purposes and treatments.Whenever there is a trauma to the body a process is initiated to minimise the damage and repair the damage. During that process a number of important substances are released to trigger repair and healing.
Microneedling is a controlled trauma to the skin depending on which area is being treated and what the aim of the treatment is. If used correctly it can stimulate the hair follicle and regrow hair.
According to one study from 2013 the base line hair count changed with 91 hairs/cm2 in a group patients treated with Microneedling and Minoxidil 5% while the group of patients receiving only treatment with minoxidil only had a hair count increase of 22.2 hairs/cm2 from baseline.
The effect of Microneedling is believed to be due to a number of reasons, including the release of growth factors from platelets. The activation of platelets also increase the release of epidermal growth factors and stimulate skin regeneration.
The trauma caused by the microneedling activates stem cells in the bulge area of the hair follicle as part of the wound repair and skin healing processes.
Further the Microneedling also causes the expression of hair growth related genes such as B catenin, Wnt3a and Wnt10b
Skin repair and healing after a trauma to the skin is a very complex process. Despite massive research we do not have a 100% understanding of what exactly what happens. The role or stimulation of the hair follicle during a controlled trauma is also not fully establish.
M-PRP for hair loss at My Hair Clinic
As one of the few clinics My Hair Clinic offers DR PRP and Glo Finn along with FUE hair transplantation combined with Microneedling. With M-PRP at My Hair Clinic you are addressing your hair loss from various angles for a synergetic effect
M-PRP without FUE hair transplantation
The purpose of this is mainly to reduce the speed of hair loss and re-activate dormant hair follicles to start producing hair again. At My Hair clinic we also offer PRP in combination with microneedling.
This is specially useful for the following patients
Men or women with a poor donor-area
Men with hair loss in the crown before 35 years of age
Patients that are not willing to have or wanting to have FUE surgery
Patients that want the shortest possible downtime without taking regular oral or topical medication
With reference to the studies mentioned above, we recommend 3-4 sessions with 2-4 weeks interval. If optimal results are required, then this should be combined with weekly microneedling of the scalp for 4-8 weeks to further counter the hair loss.
We recommend Dr PRP though we can also offer other solutions if cost is an issue.
M-PRP during FUE hair transplantation
The main purpose in this case is to speed up the healing and get a faster aesthetic result. One study showed that after a given time there were more hair growth in a recipient-area that had PRP treatment along with the surgery as compared to hair transplantation alone. However, as the hair count was done before the final results the effect of PRP could reflect
A higher net-growth from adding PRP to the surgery
That the net-growth is the same, but results appear sooner
In both cases PRP is useful along with a hair transplantation as it can shorten the time the patient has to wait for the hair growth to kick in. It can also be combined with microneedling to speed up the results even further, which is why we recommend the M-PRP in connection with a hair transplantation.
We recommend two sessions of PRP (preferable combined with microneedling) when used in connection with FUE hair transplantation. Usually the first set of PRP is carried out one week ahead of the surgery and then on the day of the surgery.
This way the scalp has already been put into a healing state at the time of the surgery.
