Frozen Shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

Frozen shoulder is an inflammatory condition characterized by gradually worsening pain, restricted active and passive movement of the shoulder. Frequently, the condition gets worse over a period of time.

We offer physiotherapy and medical treatment for frozen shoulder. Depending on the severity of your condition Dr Sharia Syed, PT, and Dr Mazhar Hussain may need to work together to enhance the results and speed up your recovery.  

SYMPTOMS

  • Worsening pain
  • Increasing shoulder stiffness
  • Pain at extreme movements
  • Painful lying on the affected shoulder
  • Difficult to perform overhead activities such as hanging

Clothes

  • Patients feel discomfort brushing their hair, clothing and personal hygiene
  • Pain gets worse during night
  • Associated neck pain

CAUSES

  • Immobilized shoulder for longer duration
  • Post surgery
  • Overuse injuries (inflammation of the tendons and connective tissues)
  • Fractures
  • Other injuries

STAGES

  • FREEZING STAGE
  1. Painful phase
  2. Mild stiffness
  3. Interrupted sleep
  4. Lasts up to2-9 months
  • FROZEN STAGE
  1. Less pain in slight movements
  2. More painful in extreme movements
  3. Stiffness gets worse
  4. May last4-12 months
  • RESOLUTION STAGE
  1. Improved movement of the shoulder
  2.  Lasts up to 6 months to 2 years

RISK FACTORS

  • Females are more affected
  • 40-60 years of age
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Stroke
  • Thyroid disease
  • Heart disease

Electrotherapy

  • Moist Heat therapy
  • TENS

Exercise Therapy

  • ROM Exercises

Manual therapy

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

  • NSAIDS (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs)
